Sarah A. Matheny, daughter of Elijah and Elnor Matheny, was born March16, 1834, in Adams county, O. She moved with her parents to Virginia in 1847; from there to Illinois in 1853 and to Jasper county, Ia., in 1864. She was united in marriage with Wm. Fudge near Fairmount, Jasper county, Ia., Sept. 5, 1867. They resided near Monroe until the spring of 1871 when they removed to Cass county where she has lived with her husband and family until her decease.
She was converted at the age of 16 and united with the M. E. church of which she remained a faithful member until death.
She was the mother of five children, three of whom survive her.
She departed this life Nov. 30, 1893 at the home of her parents in Monroe, Jasper county, Ia., at the age of 59 years, 8 months and 14 days.
Less than three weeks ago she left her home in Atlantic in her usual health to assist in caring for her aged mother near the door of death and a sick sister at Monroe. After administering to their wants a few days she was stricken down with disease and in a short week passed form labor to reward, leaving her sister restored to health and her mother lingering at the door of death, soon to follow. Truly she lived not for herself but to administer to others. Her three children David, Luetta, Ora were present at her death. The remains were conveyed by train to Marne where the funeral services were held in the M. P. church Dec. 2, 1893, conducted by an old friend, Rev. J. M. Tool, of Monroe, assisted by Revs. Brown and Throckmorton. The services were attended by a large number of relatives and friends after which her body was laid to rest in the “Silent City of the Dead” in Brighton township cemetery by the side of her husband who had passed on before.
