Mary Elizabeth Karwal

Mary Elizabeth Karwal, and eight year resident at Colonial Manor of Anita, succumbed peacefully to pneumonia at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic the evening of March 29, 2009.

She was delivered by her Grandfather, Dr. W. R. Koob, to Kathleen Koob Miller and Harry Miller at their home in Brayton on Aug. 31, 1916. A graduate of Exira High, Mary was a farm wife west of Brayton for 15 years, a teacher at several Audubon County country schools beginning in 1951, and the Exira and Audubon public systems, retiring in 1978.

She began her teaching career with a Normal Training Certificate from high school and received her Bachelors Degree in Education at Drake University in 1962, after many years of traveling to extension classes in Des Moines.

She was a member of the Atlantic Does, Iowa Teachers Association, Nishna Hills Golf Club and the Brayton American Legion Auxilliary [Auxiliary], Ballou Post.

Mary was preceded in death by husband of sixty-four years, Harold Lester Karwal, in 1998 and youngest son, Bill, in 2007.

She is survived by younger sister, Isabel Murray of Wilson Creek, Wash.; daughter-in-law Donna Karwal of Atlantic; son Joe Karwal and wife Norma of Yuba City, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life is scheduled at Hockenberry’s Funeral Home, at 1804 E. Seventh Street, on Saturday, April 4 at 10:30 am, with the Atlantic D.O.E.S. serving lunch after.
