Mrs. Fred [Ona] McDermott Dies

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. at SS Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Atlantic for Mrs. Fred McDermott, 81. Msgr. Bart Kane officiated. The church organist provided music.

Casket bearers were Fred Brooks, Mervin Taylor, Mike Richter, Anthony DeVorak and LeRoy Williamson. Interment was in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery.

Ona M. McDermott, oldest resident of Wiota, was born Nov. 30, 1893, the daughter of Tom and Ida Turbush Malone, and passed away Monday evening, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m. at Cass County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. McDermott granduated [graduated] from the Wiota High School and enrolled in Atlantic for a year, then attended St. Joseph’s Academy in Des Moines. Returning to Wiota, she was employed at Huffs Store and taught piano.

She was united in marriage to Fred McDermott on Aug. 20, 1915. After their marriage they moved to Fairbury, Nebr., where they lived about a year, returning to Wiota, which has been their home since. Mrs. McDermott was news correspondent for the Atlantic News Telegraph for over 35 years, and she also collected Wiota water rent at the City Hall the first of each month. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Fred, two sons, Frederic of Independence, Mo., and Tom of Atlantic: two grandsons, Rick and Jerry McDermott of Atlantic and a great granddaughter, Kammy McDermott. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clyde Malone, and an infant brother, Paul.
