John Thomas Johnson was born in Campbell Co., Va., June 1, 1836, and died at his home in Marne, Iowa, September 18, 1908, being seventy-two years, three months and eighteen days old at the time of his decease.
In his early youth he moved with his parents to Randolph Co., Indiana, where he resided until the opening of the Civil war, when he enlisted in the 69th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and after three years of faithful service was honorably discharged, returning to his home in Indiana.
On March 4, 1866, he was married to Lucy J. Storer, who has ever since been his faithful companion, and now in deep sorrow awaits the unending reunion.
In the fall of 1868, he and his wife removed from Indiana to Kentucky, where they lived two years, then moved westward to Cass county, Iowa, where Mr. Johnson’s father’s family had come a year previous with the exception of two years spent in Audubon Co. Mr. Johnson and his family have since made their home in Cass Co., in all about thirty-six years.
His father’s family consisted of eleven children of whom five daughters and two sons remain to suffer the loss of their stricken brother. He leaves also surviving, eight of his ten children and thirteen grandchildren.
He was a worthy and sincere member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Marne. Mr. Johnson’s daily life was a eulogy eloquent in his praise. As a neighbor he was generous, genial and accomating [accommodating]. As a father and husband he was kind, loving and provident. As a citizen, he was honest and honorable, giving the best he had in defense and service of his country.
The funeral services were held in the M. P. church Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. C. W. Hohanshelt, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. The remains were laid to rest in the Brighton cemetery.
