ISAAC V. CONINE, RESIDENT COUNTY 51 YEARS, PASSES

Death Occurred Yesterday A. M. at Local Hospital—He Was 85 Years of Age—Widow Survives Him.

Isaac V. Conine, a resident of Cass county since the autumn of 1870 and one of the best known and most highly respected residents of Atlantic for the last quarter of a century, is dead at the age of 85.

His death occurred yesterday morning at the Atlantic hospital, where he had gone for a minor operation. Several months ago Mr. Conine sustained a stroke of paralysis, from which he had never fully recovered. This, combined with his extreme age, hastened his death.

Was a “Buckeye.”

Mr. Conine was a “Buckeye” by birth. He was born in Licking county, Ohio, July 30, 1860. His parents were Peter and Cornelia Conine, pioneers of Ohio. They were farmers.

On August 23, 1860, Mr. Conine was married to Miss Rachel Todd at McComb, Ohio. The only one of the marriage guests still living is Mrs. M. C. Todd, as sister of Mrs. Conine, who is with the latter at her home, 907 Cedar street.

At the outbreak of the civil war, Isaac Conine and his brother James enlisted in Company G., 78th Ohio infantry. The regiment became a part of Sherman’s army and the young men saw plenty of active service. The Conine brothers fought at Murfreesboro, Franklin and Nashville and in other lesser engagements. James was taken prisoner and for a time was held in Libby prisoners.

Came to Cass.

In the autumn of 1870 Mr and Mrs. Conine came to Cass county, settling on a farm in Grove township. There they lived for twenty years, when they moved to a farm in Washington township. This was their home until they came to Atlantic to live twenty-six years ago.

Mr. Conine was a member of Sam Rice post, Grand Army of the Republic. In religion he was a Methodist and for years had been a member of the First Methodist church.

Family Survives.

Besides the widow, there are four children surviving. The latter, all residents of Atlantic and community are Mrs. Alice Trainer, Mrs. Catherine Lackey, Frank and Howard Conine.

Funeral services for Mr. Conine will be held at 2:30 Tuesday at the First Methodist church, the Rev. M. R. Talley officiating. Burial will be in Atlantic cemetery.
