ANOTHER PIONEER AT REST.

George W. Crouch, another of Cass county’s well known and successful pioneers, passed quietly away early last evening, Thursday, at the home of his son, Chas. L. Crouch in Pymosa township, four miles northwest of this city.

Mr. Crouch was born in Campbell county, Virginia, June 1, 1831, where he grew to manhood and where, on August 24, 1858 he was married to Miss Mary Blankenship, a sister of E. L. Blankenship of Union township, this county. The following year the young couple moved to Indiana where they resided till 1863 when they, with other relatives, came to Cass county and settled on the southeast quarter of section 24, Brighton township. When they located on the place their home consisted of a small log cabin of one room, but twenty-five acres of the land was under cultivation while the native Indians were almost their only neighbors. The farm was purchased by Mr. Crouch for $13 per acre with growing crop, and here he began the successful life of frontier farmer and here laid the foundation for an easy life in his old age. Here also death came to claim the young wife and mother who left him with four children, Alice, now Mrs. S. Allen of the state of Washington, Roland, now also in the west, Chas. L., with whom he has for several years made his home, and Sarah C., who died Oct. 19, 1879. Mr. Crouch was married twice after the death of his first wife, and both these have preceeded him on the journey from whence none return.

For several years past Mr. Crouch has been slowly failing and was taken seriously ill while on a visit at the old Virginia home last fall. He was brought back home by his son and has since been a constant sufferer with heart complaint. Yesterday he appeared to be in his usual condition, was up and about the house and yard all day. Along towards evening he lay down on the sofa to rest and sank into a peaceful sleep from which he never awakened.

The funeral services will be held at the home Sunday at 12 o’clock and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at Marne.
