DEATH PREVENTED CASS MAN BEING NEPHEW LINCOLN
Mother of R. A. Berry who Died This Morning, was a Sister of Ann Rutledge.
Death, at an untimely age, of Ann Rutledge, fiancee of Abraham Lincoln, martyred president, whose one hundred and seventeenth birthday is observed today, prevented Robert Anderson Berry, Cass county pioneer and native of Illinois, who died early this morning in this city, from being a nephew of the Great Emancipator.
Mr. Berry's mother, whose maiden name was Jane Rutledge, was a sister of Ann Rutledge, whose romance with Lincoln, ended abruptly by her death, makes one of the tenderest pages in the story of the life of the great American.
Was 75 Years Old.
Mr. Berry passed away at the house of his son-in-law and daughter, R. F. Neal and wife, 801 West Sixth street, at 6 o'clock this morning. Death was the result of diabetes, from which he had suffered for many years. He was born May 15, 1848 at Petersburg, Menard County, Ill., being the son of James and Jane (Rutledge) Berry. He came to Cass county in 1868 and located on a farm two and a half miles southwest of Marne in Brighton township. On the 23rd of November, 1874[?], he was married to Miss Virginia Frances Johnson and they lived on the farm in Brighton township till 1903, when they removed to Atlantic. They lived for many years on West Tenth street and there Mrs. Berry passed away on the 7th of March, 1915. Two children died in infancy, one daughter Miss Alta, in 1899, and another daughter, Mrs. W. H. Barnard, May 26, 1925. One son, J. O. Berry, of this city, and four daughters survive. The daughters are Mesdames G. N. Collier, R. F. Neal and G. H. Allen, Atlantic and Mrs. C. F. Miller, Anita. There are eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and two brothers, J. W. Berry, of Anita and A. F. Berry of Atlantic. Mr. Berry was a long time member of the Masonic fraternity, being a charter member of the Marne Eastern Star chapter, a member of Pymosa lodge No. 271, A. F. & A. M., of Kedron commandary No. 12, Knights Templar, Ophir chapter No. 81 and Golden Rule chapter No. 199, Order of Eastern Star.
Funeral Sunday.
The Masonic fraternity will leave charge of the rites at the grave, following the funeral services at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Congregational church, of which denomination. Mr. Berry was a lifelong member. The Rev. H. O. Spelman, former local pastor and now pastor at Clarion, will officiate and interment will be made in the Atlantic Cemetery beside deceased's wife.
