J. O. Berry, 84, Atlantic Retired Farmer, Dies

J. O. Berry, 84, a lifelong resident of the Atlantic and Marne vicinities, died at 9:35 this morning at the Atlantic Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient a week. He had been in failing health more than a year. Mr. and Mrs. Berry reside at 404 East Fourth street.

He was born on a farm west of Marne Feb. 5, 1875, the son of Robert Anderson and Virginia Johnson Berry and grew to manhood there. Following his marriage to Eleanora Hansen in Atlantic Feb. 15, 1899, they farmed 3 1/2 miles west of Atlantic until retiring and moving to Atlantic in 1925. Mr. Berry was a member of Grove lodge 492, Marne Masons, more than 60 years and was a member of Atlantic B.P.O. Elks lodge 445.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Delbert and Ralph Berry of Atlantic; two daughters, Mrs. Leo Harris of Atlantic and Mrs. Guy Brown of Eldora; two sisters, Mrs. R. F. Neal of Atlantic and Mrs. C. F. Miller of Des Moines; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Mrs. Howard Allen, Mrs. Grace Barnard, Mrs. George Collier and Alta and Ida Berry and a brother, Ira Berry.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Roland funeral home, the Rev. Donald Bissinger officiating. Graveside services at the Atlantic cemetery will be in charge of Grove Masonic lodge of Marne.
