Manning - Mrs. Emma Karsten, 89, of Manning, died Monday, July 28, in the long-term care unit of Manning General Hospital. She had been a resident of the Manning Plaza nursing home for eight years. Rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, where friends may call after 3 p.m. The Rev. Edward F. Heinicke, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ron Schroeder, Keith Schroeder, Lyle Karsten, Gale Rundell, Harold Ruhde and Delbert Hinze.

Mrs. Karsten was born at Davenport May 4, 1886, a daughter of William and Johanna Claussen Ruhde and came to Manning with her family at an early age. One Jan. 4, 1905, she married Henry Karsten and they farmed near Manning until moving into own in 1938. With the exception of two years in Oregon they made their home in Manning. Mr. Karsten died June 3, 1954. Mrs. Karsten is survived by five children including Mrs. Roy (Rosella) Hargens of North Bend, Ore.; Lester, Mrs. Merlin (Florence) Schroeder and Mrs. Merlin (Elaine) Struve of Manning; and Mrs. Joe ( Edna) Sonksen of Sioux City; also 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a great- great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death besides her husband were an infant son, two brothers and three sisters.
