Manning - Funeral service for Grace Edna Carter of Manning will be a t 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Mrs. Carter, 99, died Friday, June 18, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center. Pastor Curtis Denney of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Atlantic will officiate the service. Remembrances will be delivered by Steven Austin. Casket bearers will be Steven Austin Sr., Steven Austin Jr., Jerry Carter, Daniel Folkers, Wade Reikofski and Ron Pruel. Burial will be in Manning cemetery. A daughter of Norman and Viola (Dowd) Goodwin, she was born June 1, 1905, north of Waverly and grew up and attended school south of Nashua. She then helped her father on the family farm and worked as a housekeeper. She moved to the Defiance area in March 1925 and worked as a housekeeper in the home of her longtime pen pal, Orville Carter, to care for his mother. She and Mr. Carter were married June 23, 1925, at Harlan. They raised four children and lived on a farm south of Defiance until 1940, when they moved to a farm five miles south of Manning,. They retired in 1961 and moved into Manning to the home on Fourth Street they had purchased several years before. After her husband died in January 1980, Mrs. Carter continued to reside in the home with support of children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and polka and country music, belonged to the Seventh Day Adventist Church and enjoyed reciting and sharing Bible passages with others. Her health began to deteriorate after a fall in her home in February. Survivors include a daughter, Leota Austin, and her husband Beal, of Des Moines; a son, Merlin Carter, and his wife Arlene, of Manning; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons: Ival "Dean" Carter and Gailen Carter; four sisters: Mabel in childhood, Hazel Reed, Myrtle Floden, Maude Morris and Delphine Goodwin; and a brother, Jessie Goodwin.
