I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 5 September 1902. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
Mrs. Anna M. Thürlimann
Mrs. Anna Maria Thürlimann, whose maiden name was Müller, died last week following a short illness. Everything that medical science could accomplish was done for her, but without success. The weakness of old age had long since set in, and her body was not in a condition to withstand the illness. She died in the home of her son Edward after having received the Last Rights of the Catholic Church. As a loyal son, Edward had always taken care of his dear mother during the last years.
She was born on 26 August 1823 in Herrstein, Bavaria, and thus had reached her 80th year. She came to America in 1840, and lived near Peoria, Illinois until she married Dr. John Martin Thürlimann in 1851. She then moved with her husband to Springbay, Illinois, and from there to Washburn, where Mr. Thürlimann died in 1870. He left behind his wife and three small children. She returned again to Springbay, and in 1882, she came to Carroll, where she lived since then with her children. Her children, Edward, Rosalia, and Leo, all received a good upbringing. Both sons received a good education at the college in Ames.
The burial took place on Saturday from the Saints Peter and Paul Church, with a large attendance.
