I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. The obituary was originally published on Friday, 3 June 1892. I have not changed the name or place spellings. Any information in brackets or notes at the end is my own explanation. It reads as follows:
Mrs. Johann Neu
On Monday at 12:00 noon, Mrs. Johann Neu of Roselle, Iowa was called away into eternity, well-prepared through having received the holy Last Rights. The deceased suffered a stroke on 22 May, and was discovered lying in her yard. It was three days before she recovered her full mental faculties, and from that time until her death, the deceased endured great pain which, however, she endured with great patience and Christian resignation. The deceased leaves behind a grieving husband, four sons, four daughters, four sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, and one sister, who deeply mourn their irreplaceable loss.
Mrs. Johann Neu came to America with her husband from Neukirchen near Köln [Cologne] in 1856. They settled first in Illinois, where through hard work they earned enough that in 1878 they established their own home in Roselle, Carroll County, Iowa. Since the time of her presence here, the deceased earned the love and respect of all her acquaintances, who appreciate the painful loss of the bereaved and extend their deepest sympathy. The funeral took place on Thursday, and the deceased was buried in the cemetery in Hillsdale [Roselle]. May she rest in peace.
NOTES: The Roselle cemetery record states: Margaretha Neu, 8 Oct 1828 to 20 May 1892, so there is some difference in the dates.
