I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. The obituary was originally published on Friday, 12 February 1909. I have not changed the name or place spellings. Any information in brackets or notes at the end is my own explanation. It reads as follows:

Heinrich Meiners

On Wednesday, 3 February 1909, Heinrich Meiners died of pneumonia at his home in Pleasant Valley Township.

The deceased was born in 1861 at Lechterke, Hanover [Hannover], Germany. He immigrated to America as a young man and settled in Carroll County, Iowa. In 1883, he married the widow Mrs. F. Venteicher. This marriage produced eight children, four of whom have predeceased their father. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his elderly father living in Lake Huron, Minnesota; a brother, Gerhard Meiners, living near Dedham; and two sisters, Mrs. Jos. Nusse, and Mrs. Jos. Derbenhause of Lake Huron, Minnesota. They all attended the burial, with the exception of his father, who could not risk making the journey due to his age. Since his marriage, the deceased had lived on his farm in Pleasant Valley Township.

Heinrich Meiners was a hard-working and respected man, and his death will be sorely felt by many people.

The funeral took place from the local Saints Peter and Paul Church, and he was laid to his final rest in the German-Catholic cemetery.
