I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. The obituary was originally published on Friday, 3 June 1892. I have not changed the name or place spellings. Any information in brackets or notes at the end is my own explanation. It reads as follows:
Mrs. John Hess
Herewith is the sad report that on Sunday morning at 11:30 Mrs. John Hess passed away peacefully, having resigned to the will of God.
When her dear husband, with whom she had lived in a true Christian marriage for 43 years, preceded her in death on 29 April 1890, she already felt that her hour was not far off, and after she suffered a stroke a year ago, she did not recover. She was bed-ridden for three months and bore her suffering with Christian patience until her death ensued.
The deceased was born in Luxemburg. She moved to America with her husband in 1859 and settled in St. Tonatus [should probably be Donatus] near Dubuque. The family later moved to Waterloo, and moved to Carroll in 1885.
At her grave mourn three sons and a daughter, of whom the oldest, Johann, lives near Waterloo. Then follows the daughter, Mrs. Schiltz, from here. Nick. lives in Buncombe near Dubuque. And the youngest is John P. Hess, the teller at the local German Bank.
A solemn funeral for the deceased was celebrated Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the local Saints Peter and Paul Church, after which the burial took place with a large attendance of mourners.
NOTES: Carroll cemetery records list Theresa Hess, 1816-1892, and John Hess, Sr., 1827-1890.
