Sept 21, 1904 - Carroll Herald - Maurice Bowler died at the hospital for insane at Clarinda last Thursday morning. His remains were shipped to Carroll, arriving Friday morning, and Sunday he was buried. The funeral was held in St. Joseph's church, Father Farrelly in charge, the Foresters and sodalities marching.

For many years Maurice Bowler was one of the hard working, prosperous men of this place. At one time he was a member of the city council. But his devotion to his business was his undoing. He labored in season and out, in storm and sunshine, and never took a day for rest or pleasure. He was a good manager with all and his affairs were prosperous. But he paid no heed to his health which was gradually ruined by over exertion and finally the collapse came. He gave way under the great strain and mental derangement followed. He was sent to the state hospital at Clarinda but no improvement resulted from the treatment he received while there. Gradually he got worse and worse till the end came last week.

He leaves a widow and several children in Carroll. He had accumulated considerable property and his family are left in comfortable circumstances.

The deceased was forty six years old last March. In the year 1880 he came to this country, having been born in Ireland. The same year Mrs. Bowler, then Miss Kate O'Donnell, came across the water and located in Carroll.

The followng year, on May 9 Mr. Bowler was married to Miss O'Donnell by Rev. Father Urbany, and they have since been residents of Carroll. To them were born nine children, five of which are living. A sister, Mary Bowler, and an uncle, P. Behan, both of Clinton, attended the funeral.
