March 24, 1891 - Mrs. Cordelia Griffith died very suddenly this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Akin in Grant township, two miles east of town, where she went to make a visit for a few days.
Cordelia Lawrence was born in New York on the 22nd of April, 1826. She came to Iowa when but a small child and on September, 1851, was married to I. N. Griffith, who departed this life August 10, 1890. The deceased couple moved to Carroll about twenty years ago, where they resided up to the time of their deaths. Mrs. Griffith was a devout christian women all her life and in former years took an active part with her husband in all christain work. At the time of her death she seemed happy in her christian belief, and was glad to know that she was to depart this life, to take up that of a better and brighter one, where she expected to join her lamented husband in the presence of the Almighty.
The deceased leaves a large family of children, and a sister and brother to mourn the loss of a fond and loving mother and a cherished sister. Geo. Lawrence, of Jefferson, and Mrs. Andrew Courier, of Atlantic are the sister and brother mentioned above. Of her children eight are still living, the oldest of & which is Mrs. Hestwood, of Indianola, Iowa; then follows Benjamin Griffith, of Montezuma; John Griffith, of St. Paul; Eli Griffith, of Newell; Jas. E. Griffith, Mrs. Barger, Mrs. Akin, and I. N., jr., of Carroll.
The sorrow and grief stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community in their loss. The funeral will occur from the residence of the deceased next Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Folson will officiate, and probably will be assisted by Rev. Hestwood, of lndianola, a son-in-law of the deceased.
