July 30, 1941 - Carroll Daily - Committal services were held at the Carroll cemetery at 3:30 this afternoon for Miss Bertha Dowd formerly of Carroll, who died at the home of her sister, Mrs Margaret Barnett in Indianola and was brought back here for burial in the family lot. The minister of the Indianola Baptist Church, who officiated at rites there this morning, was also in charge of the graveside service. Pallbearers were J.U. England, H.C. Rawhouser, and H.W. Stratemeyer.
Mrs Barnett and daughter, Ruth, accompanied the body here for burial. Miss Dowd was the oldest member of the George N. Dowd family, who were pioneer residents here. For many years the family lived in their residence on North West street, now the site of the A.C. Onken residence.
Miss Dowd, who was a registered nurse, had followed her profession in Des Moines for a long time. She worked in this capacity before she and her sister, Grace conducted one of the first cafeterias in Chicago. They operated the Noon Day lunch on Michigan Boulevard serving only the noon time meal. After disposing of this business, Miss Dowd returned to Des Moines, where she again took up nursing.
She was taken ill about a year and a half ago while visiting her sister, Grace, in Arizona, suffering a stroke at that time. She was later brought to the Barnett home in Indianola, where she remained until her death.
Surviving are her two sisters, above named. Miss Grace Dowd is supervisor of nurses in the hospital on the Indian reservation at Valentine, Ariz.
Her parents and one brother, Clyde, preceded her in death.
