March 16, 1922 - Carroll Times - Gustav Carl Johnson, manager of the Burke hotel and an employe of the hotel for 38 years, died at St. Anthony hospital at an early hour Tuesday morning after a severe illness of many weeks. The cause of his death was acute heart trouble, an affliction he had suffered since he had an attack of influenza about three years ago. Mr. Johnson had never married and had no immediate relatives in this vicinity. Mr. Johnson had consulted many physicians since his attack of influenza in the hope of benefitting his health, even making a trip to Rochester for examination by a specialist, but he grew steadily worse until his sufferings were relieved by death.
In the death of Mr. Johnson the citizens of the community feel keenly the loss of a genial, pleasant, kindly man who had gained the respect and esteem of a great many friends. He held a position of trust and responsibility and never shirked his duty to his employer. Mr. Johnson was popular with patrons of the hotel, and was intimately known by many business men of Carroll.
Mr. Johnson was born in Boxholm, Sweden, in December, 1864, and came to America when a young man. Thirty-eight years ago he entered the employ of the late E.M. Burke, then proprietor of the Burke hotel. He was ambitious, eager to learn and very anxious to please his employer. Starting as an "errand boy" he soon became a trusted employe, was promoted and finally was given the position of manager.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Masonic organization of Carroll and was held in high esteem by his lodge brothers. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. F.G. Codd. The services will be in charge of the Masonic lodge.
