Dec 27, 1889 - Carroll Sentinel - The people of Carroll were surprised and grieved on Monday to learn of the death of John Silbaugh at his home near Spirit Lake on Sunday morning. Mr. Silbaugh died from the effects of blood poisoning, the cause of it being a scratch he received while husking corn on his farm.
Mr. Silbaugh was formerly deputy sheriff of Carroll county, and was appointed sheriff to fill the unexpired term of Louis Beechler, who became a defaulter in office. He has been living in Dickinson county about four years, and was the democratic candidate for sheriff of that county at the last election. He was a man highly respected by all who knew him, and had many warm friends in Carroll.
Mrs. Silbaugh and Mr. E.M. Betzer accompanied the remains to Carroll by rail, arriving here on Tuesday afternoon, being met at the depot by a large number of friends, who accompanied the remains to their resting place in Carroll cemetery.
The deepest sympathy of this community go out to Mrs. Silbaugh, widow of the deceased, in this her dark deep hour of affliction. He who doeth all things well will comfort and cheer her in her sorrow and bereavement. Mrs. Silbaugh returned to her home in Dickinson county Wednesday afternoon and will probably return to Carroll to live in the near future. Through energy and economy Mr. Silbaugh had accumulated a fair amount of this world's goods, and consequently leaves his family in comfortable circumstances financially.
