Jan 14, 1952 - Carroll Daily Times - Mrs. Sarah Maria Callaway Stevens, 75, former Carroll resident, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday at Dixon, Calif. Mrs. Stevens, widow of Thomas W. Stevens, succumbed to cancer after being seriously ill for two months. Funeral services will be held in Carroll Wednesday afternoon, with the Rev. C. Hugo Orf, minister of the Methodist church, officiating. Short rites at the Funeral home at 1:45 p.m. will be followed by services at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock. Burial will be beside her husband in the Carroll cemetery.
Mrs. Stevens had been active in Methodist church work while living in Carroll. She had served as president of the Ladies Industrial society and the Women's Home Missionary society, which in later years were merged to form the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She had taught a young boys Sunday school class and later, the adult class.
Mrs. Stevens, the former Sarah Maria Callaway, was a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Callaway. Born Dec. 24, 1876, at Plattsville, Wis., she moved to Lebanon, Kan., at the age of six years. Coming to Carroll in 1898, she made her home with Mrs. J.A. Hale on North West street until she married Mr. Stevens here in 1901. Mrs. Stevens, who attended Normal school at Salina, Kan., taught school prior to her marriage. Leaving Carroll in 1924, Mrs. Stevens moved to Newton, and from there to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1942.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Mabel) Callaway, Dixon, Calif.; two nieces whom she reared, Mrs. Max (Violet) Jones, Dixon, and Mrs. Carl (Gertrude) Bauerle, Carroll; other nieces and nephews; and three brothers: L.J. Callaway, Los Angeles; Thomas Callaway, Iselton, Calif.; and Arch M. Callaway, Tulsa, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
After leaving Newton, Mrs. Stevens spent the time with Mrs. Bauerle in Carroll, Mrs. Callaway and Mrs. Jones at Dixon, Mrs. Doris Abbott and Cecil Callaway in Los Angeles and with her brothers. She was a member of the Methodist church here.
