Jan 3, 1938 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. Permilla Ann Moates, widow of a Civil War Veteran, died about 10 o'clock Saturday morning at the St. Anthony hospital, where she had been taken after suffering a broken hip in a fall at her home Friday afternoon. Mrs. Moates had not been well since the day before Christmas, having had an attack of influenza Friday afternoon.

While taking a drink of water, she spilled some on the floor. As she tried to wipe it up, she lost her balance and fell. The shock of the injury which she suffered resulted in her death. The body rested at the Huffman Funeral home until the hour of services. Rites were held at the funeral home at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, with Rev. George Bullock, pastor of the Assembly of God church, officiating. Mrs. Moats, who was 80 years old, was not only the widow but also a daughter of a Civil War veteran.

She was born, Ann Chamberlain, on August 4, 1857, at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Her Scotch-Irish ancestors were American born for generations. Her father was killed in the Civil War and her mother died when she was only four years old.

She was then taken into the home of her grandparents, by whom she was reared. Her girlhood was spent in the Como and Sterling, Illinois, vacinities. She attended school at Linden and Erie, Illinois.

On Feb. 8, 1873, at Gait, Illinois, she married Victor Moates. They lived at Sterling, Illinois, before coming to Iowa in 1889. Locating at Villisca, Ia., they lived there only a short time, moving to Carroll in 1890. Mr. Moates died Dec. 10, 1925.

Surviving Mrs. Moates are two sons, and one daughter: Oliver T. Moates, resident fireman at the City hall in Carroll; Mrs. Ora Moates Harrison, of West 8th street, and Earl Emmet Moates, who made his home with his mother. She also leaves seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Moates was the last member of her family. An only sister died in early childhood. She was a member of the Pentacostal church.
