Dec 17, 1925 - Carroll Times - Victor Moates, a resident of this city for 31 years, passed away at his home Thursday morning, December 10, after being in a serious condition for some time. Seven years ago, May 28, 1918, he suffered a stroke of paralysis, and from that time untill his death he was never a well man. He suffered with patience and fortitude during all those years. At no time was he able to leave his premises and part of the time was unable to leave his house.

Mr. Moates was born near Hagerstown, Pa., February 25, 1845, and when 5 years old moved to Dixon, Illinois, with his parents. There being no railroads to the west or great central west, the journey was made in a covered wagon.

At the age of 18 he joined the United States navy and served as a seaman in Burbank's expedition. The ship Oshitia to which crew he belonged was under the command of Captain Wilson. At the close of the Civil war, he was honorably discharged from the United States navy and on June 29, 1867, he enlisted in the artillery department of the United States army at Fort Foote, Md., of which command Col. Richard Lodors had charge. After serving for three years he was honorably discharged.

February 8, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Millie Chamberlain at Gait, Illinois. In 1890 they moved to Villisca, Ia., and from there moved to Carroll. By trade Mr. Moates was a poultry man which occupation he followed the major part of his life.

Besides his widow the survivors are two sons, Oliver F. and Earl B. Moates, and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Harrison, all of this city; also five grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.H. Parker Saturday afternoon at the Oliver Moates home and burial was made in the Carroll cemetery.
