June 17, 1968 - Carroll Daily Times - Memorial services have been set for Johnny Gerald (Jerry) Veerhusen, 19, of Carroll, a member of the crew of the U.S. atomic submarine Scorpion which was officially declared lost in the Atlantic Ocean on June 5. The rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with the Rev. Harold W. Kieck officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the United States Navy and Maurice Dunn Post No. 7, American Legion, of Carroll. Arrangements are in charge of the Huffman Memorial Chapel Lake City.

Veerhusen was a commissaryman and served as a cook and baker on the submarine which was reported overdue at Norfolk, Va., May 27, with 99 crewmen aboard. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Veerhusen Jr. of Carroll.

The youth was born at Carroll July 18, 1948, and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He graduated in 1966 from Carroll High School, where for a time he was photographer for the Hi-Recorder, school publication. He had worked at the Lee Store and Don's Bakery and also in Des Moines before enlisting in the Navy on Sept. 6, 1966, under the 120 day "Cache" program. He entered active service on Jan. 9, 1967.

Surviving are his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Veerhusen Jr., Carroll; his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hayes, Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. John Blue, Des Moines; another sister, Karen, and a brother, Randy, both at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Verlin Sapp, Des Moines, and John Veerhusen, Lake City.
