July 12, 1955 - Carroll Daily Times - Albert J. Winter, 45, chief field man in the Carroll County assessor's office, died of an embolism at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Hospital, where he had been a patient since July 6, Mr. Winter, who had entered the hospital for a medical check-up suffered an embolism from which he was apparently recovering satisfactorily when he was stricken again early Tuesday morning.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Huffman Funeral Home. The Rev. C. Hugo Orf, minister of the Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. The Odd Fellows service will be given at the graveside. Military burial will be under the direction of Maurice Dunn Post No. 7, American Legion. The Elks memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 7 o'clock Thursday evening. The Carroll County courthouse will be closed Friday morning, so that employes may attend the rites. It will open at 1 p.m.

Mr. Winter, a veteran of World War II, had served in the European theater for three years. He was commissioned a first lieutenant in the field. Since 1948, he had been chief field man in the Carroll County assessor's office. Previously he had been a postal employe here for 15 years.

Mr. Winter, son of Mr. and Mrs, Fred Winter Sr., was born Jan. 28, 1910, at Dedham. The family moved later to Lewis, Iowa, where he was graduated from high school. He had lived in Carroll 28 years.

Mr. Winter was married to Madge Nichols of Carroll Nov. 21, 1932, at Plattsmouth, Neb. Surviving with his wife are three sisters: Mrs. Leo A. Thompson, Fort Smith, Ark.; Mrs. Kesby Case, Elsie, Mich., and Mrs, Robert Wright, Beatrice, Neb.; four brothers: Fred Winter Jr., Topeka, Kan.; Marshall Winter, Red Oak; Paul Winter, Lewis; Charles Winter, Sinclair, Wyo., and one half-brother, David Petersen, Berkeley, Calif. His mother died March 28, 1955, and his father, March 31, 1948. One brother and one sister also preceded him in death.

Mr. Winter was a member of the Methodist Church, Carroll Lodge No. 279, I.O.O.F., which he has headed as noble grand, the Elks Lodge and Maurice Dunn Post No. 7, American Legion.
