H. J. Gehling, Jr., Dies Sunday at Local Hospital

Herman J. Gehling, Jr., well known farmer, who spent his entire life on the same farm one and one-half miles south of Carroll, passed away at 10:30 Sunday morning at the St. Anthony Hospital, his death occurring nearly four months after he suffered a compound leg fracture.

Mr. Gehling succumbed to tetanus which developed despite extraordinary measures taken at the time of the accident to prevent the disease.

After being in the St. Anthony Hospital for five weeks, following the accident which occurred Feb. 16, he was moved to the University Hospital at Iowa City for two weeks. He then returned to his home, where he remained until last Friday, when tetanus developed and he was taken to the local hospital.

Rites Wednesday

Funeral services are to be at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning at SS. Peter and Paul's Church, with the Rev. Father L. Schenkelberg officiating at the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

The body is being returned Tuesday morning from the Dietrich Funeral Home to the family residence to rest there until the hour of the rites .

TO PRAY ROSARY

The rosary, led by the Rev. Father Schenkelberg, will be prayed for Mr. Gehling at SS . Peter and Paul's Church immediately following the Novena Tuesday evening.

Mr. Gehling, son of Herman and the late Ella Gehling, was born at Carroll Feb. 28, 1898. He was married at SS. Peter and Paul's Church here Jan. 31, 1923, to Miss Genevieve Gross of Carroll.

Survivors

Surviving with his wife are 12 children: George, Vernon. Rita, Louise, Edward, Marilyn, Norma, James, Robert, Joann, Carl and Gerald, all at home.

He also leaves his father, Herman Gehling, Sr., of Carroll, three brothers and five sisters: Mrs. William Reiling (Mary), Coon Rapids; Henry Gehling. Clare; Theodore Gehling, Carroll; Mrs. Anton Wernimont (Agnes), Storm Lake; Sister M. Bernadita (Anna), Boscobel, Wis.; Mrs. Clarence Masching (Catherine), William Gehling and Mrs. James Houlihan (Cecelia), all of Carroll.

His mother died May 2, 1937. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, who died in infancy.

Mr. Gehling was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Church.
