Death of Mrs. H. C. Baird.

Word was received from Linneus, Missouri, that Mrs. H. C. Baird had passed away and her remains would be sent to Carroll for burial. The funeral will be held in the Presbyterian church tomorrow. Only a few days ago Mrs. Knepper responded to a call from her sister's family announcing that the latter was very low with typhoid fever. It is less than two years since Mr. and Mrs. Baird moved south for the benefit of the health of the latter. A few months ago Mrs. Baird was here, on the occasion of the death of her father, Henry Nicholson, and at that time she was in fair health and good spirits.

The deceased, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Nicholson, was born in Johnson county, Iowa, 59 years ago. There she grew to womanhood and was married in early life to J. H. Shuey. They moved to Carroll county in the early seventies, and in 1876 her husband died. In 1879 she was married to H. C. Baird and lived on a farm west of town till less than two years ago. On account of her failing health they were induced to dispose of their comfortable home and move to a warmer climate. A year ago last March Mr. and Mrs. Baird settled on a farm in Linn county, Missouri, and seemed perfectly satisfied with the change. About eight weeks ago Mrs. Baird was taken down with typhoid fever and lingered till yesterday, when she passed away. Mrs. Knepper arrived Saturday evening, but her sister was unable to speak to her. She recognized Mrs. Knepper, however, and made a vain attempt to put her arm around her. Monday evening was apparent that the end was near, and Mrs. Knepper left for home. Scarcely had she arrived when a dispatch came announcing that the end had come.

The funeral will be held at the Presbyterian church tomorrow afternoon at 2:30.

Death of Mrs. Baird.

Died, Tuesday morning, November 4, at her home at Linneus, Mo. Mrs. H. C. Baird, formerly of this place. She had been sick for eight weeks with typhoid fever but it had been broken and she was thought better, when Bright's disease set in, causing her death. Mrs. Baird was one of a large family of children, nine of whom, including our townswoman, Mrs. W. S. Knepper, are living. She was married when young to Mr. Shuey, and one child, Ben Shuey, was born of that union. In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Shuey moved to this city; the husband died the following year and was buried in this cemetery. Three years afterward Mrs. Shuey was married to H. C. Baird, and for many years resided on a farm a short distance west of Carroll. Mr. and Mrs. Baird were active workers in the Presbyterian church in this city. Mrs. Baird though never a strong woman, was tireless in works of charity and mercy. She was a most sincere and earnest Christian and beloved by all who knew her. A year ago last February, Mr. and Mrs. Baird moved to Linneus, Mo. For a time Mrs. Baird was very homesick for the old place where she had lived so many years, and for the sister, Mrs. Knepper, from whom she had never before been separated. Soon, however, she made hosts of friends as a woman of her character cannot fail to do; she, with her husband united with the Presbyterian church at Brookfield, Mo., and in time became reconciled and learned to love their new home. Her death was a terrible blow to the family. Her son and step-son, with his family from Indiana were with her at the last. Mrs. Knepper was with her a few days before her death, and Mrs. Baird recognized her sister and family even at the last. Although able to speak no word, her smile of recognition could not be mistaken.

The body was brought to this city today and the funeral was held at 2:30 this afternoon from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Groendyke of Perry, Mrs. Baird's old pastor, conducting the services. Mrs. Burkdoll of Chicago, and others of the sisters and brothers are here to attend the funeral.
