Death of John R. Atkinson

Passes Away at Home on North Court Street Last Friday Morning.

John Robert Atkinson, who has been a resident of Carroll for more than thirty years, died at his home in this city at 11:15 a.m. Friday, September 11, after an illness of about two weeks. Mr. Atkinson was born January 18, 1833, at Lancaster, Penn. His father was John Atkinson, who was a native of England, having been born at Kirk by Thore, in 1801, and who died at Lancaster, Pa., a few weeks before the birth of his son, the subject of our sketch. His mother's maiden name was Julia Ann Wilhelm. She was a native of Lancaster and died in that place when her son was about 12 years of age, so that he was bereft of both father and mother at a very early age. He was married at LaFayette, Indiana, February 11th, 1859, to Miss Louisa A. Garland, who was his faithful and loving companion for more than half a century. She died in Carroll in last November after a life of usefulness and service to all about her. Eight children were born to them one of whom, Jeanette, died in infancy in 1878, shortly after the family came to Carroll. Those living are Florence M., William G., Kate and Elizabeth, all living in Carroll, Nellie and Mrs. A. W. Gates, living at Lewiston, Montana, and John W., of Ruby, Alaska. All of these but the two last named were present at the funeral.

For the first nineteen years following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Atkinson lived in LaFayette, Ind. In the year 1878 Mr. Atkinson brought his family to Carroll, where he bought the Frank Dennett stock of hardware and has been continuously in the business ever since. He was a member of the First M. E. church, a man of upright life and a worthy citizen of the community in which he lived. The funeral was held at the church on Tuesday afternoon of this week, conducted by the pastor, Rev. S. G. Lewis, and interment was made in the Carroll cemetery, beside the grave in which the wife and mother was laid to rest in last November. There were in attendance at the funeral from out of town, the following: Chas B. Chambers, of Faulkton, S. D., a nephew; Mr. and Mrs. James A. Chambers, of Ralston, Iowa; Joseph E. Foulke, of Hartwick, Iowa, and Miss Nellie Atkinson, of Lewiston, Montana.
