Grand Army Veteran Dies

J. L. Barger Passes Away Suddenly at His Home on North Court Street.

J. L. Barger, one of Carroll's earliest settlers, died on Sunday, December 7 at his home in this city shortly after noon. Although Mr. Barger had been in poor health his death came quite unexpectedly to the family and his friends. He was in conversation with a brother-in-law, Eli Griffith, and had just taken a ring from his finger to hand to the latter when he fell back in bed and expired. Mr. Barger was born in Milford, Indiana, October 18, 1846, and came to Iowa in boyhood with his family, first settling in Benton county. He enlisted in the 47th Iowa infantry, in which he served for one year and was then discharged for infirmities received in the service. He came to Carroll in 1867 while the town was but a village and worked at the trade of harness maker. He was married in 1870 to Miss Helen Winters, who survives him with two daughters, Mrs. John Winterbourne and Mrs. Clyde Briggs. He was a member of Signet Lodge, A. F. and A. M. and of Copestone Chapter, R. A. M. and Azgad Commandery, K. T. For several years he has served as tyler of the lodges. He was also an active member of Jeff C. Davis Post G. A. R.

He has not been in good health for several years but the malady from which he died, cancer of the stomach, is believed to have been of recent development. The funeral was held at the family residence on North Court street, Wednesday, the services being in charge of the Masonic orders and Grand Army. Rev. S. Grant Lewis preached the funeral discourse.
