Nicholas Post Mustered Out

After Long Life of Usefulness and Respect Comrade Post Answers Call

At his home on the south side last Thursday afternoon Nicholas Post, a pioneer citizen of the county, bowed down in submission to his Creator and his soul took flight to the promised land which knows no sorrow nor pains. Comrade Post had been ailing the past two years, his suffering being due chiefly to old age, but his death was sudden and came as a surprise to his friends. He was suddenly taken seriously ill in the afternoon. Help was summoned and everything possible was done to ease the old gentleman. Father Kuemper was called and administered the last sacred sacrament of the Catholic church and about five o'clock the end came and Comrade Post passed away well fortified in the ministrations of the church. He had always been a dutiful and devout member of the Catholic church and was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul parish. In later years he took great comfort in living near the church and in taking part in the religious faith in which he lived and died. Nicholas Post was born in Luxemburg, Germany, in 1826. When yet a young man he came to this country. He settled in Carroll county in 1869. His wife preceded him to that great beyond several years ago. He had no relatives so far as we can learn. He had always met the battles of this life in a manner becoming a veteran of the Civil War. He was honest and neighborly and he possessed many true friends who hastened to his side in his last few declining years when he was in need of help. He died as he lived, meeting the inevitable fearlessly and knowing that he would soon serve under the greatest of all commanders, his Maker. The funeral services were held from SS. Peter and Paul church Saturday forenoon. Solemn Requiem Mass was read over the departed and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the consecrated ground in Mt. Carmel cemetery beside the remains of his wife. Peace to his soul.

(Contributor note: Headstone for Nicholas Post provides a birth year of 1828. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel cemetery.)
