J. J. Rohan.

Yesterday the sad news of the death of Joseph J. Rohan came to the city. It was a sad shock to his many friends as but few of them knew of his sickness. About two weeks ago Mr. Rohan went to Omaha to negotiate the sale of a patent he had invented to the U. P. machine shops in that city. He remained there about a week and feeling unwell returned to his home in Sheridan township not far from Lidderdale. After arriving at his father's home he complained of inflammatory rheumatism with which he had been afflicted during the past year. It was not until last Saturday evening that the parents and his two brothers, who were at the house, thought that anything was ailing him other than his old disease. When Dr. Wright arrived he found that the patient had a well developed case of smallpox.

The next day Joe said he was feeling much better than he had and thought that he would be able to be out again in a day or so. That evening he was bright and happy with the thought of his speedy recovery. It was not until about 8 o'clock in the evening that he complained of feeling worse. His brother Dave went to call the doctor but before he succeeded in getting him, which was only a few moments, little Joe had breathed his last.

The deceased was 33 years old the 10th of last June and made his home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Rohan and his two brothers. When he was 18 months old he suffered from a paralytic stroke which rendered him a cripple the remainder of his life. The departed was a manly man, kind and affectionate and bore his burden of affliction with true christian fortitude.

The remains were buried yesterday without ceremony in the Catholic cemetery in this city. The parents remained at home under quarantine.

The death is one of those dispensations of Providence that carries sadness to all and especially to the kind father and loving mother who had watched over their little boy with that devotion that only comes to those who have such responsibilities entrusted to them.

There are no indications that any others of the family have contracted the disease. Fortunately the father and the mother are both immune to the disease having had it years before.
