Death of a Pioneer Woman

Johanna Rohan Died Last Friday From an Attack of Pneumonia

At St. Anthony's hospital in this city last Friday morning occurred the death of one of the pioneer settlers when Mrs. Johanna Rohan passed away after a two weeks' illness with pneumonia. During all of her seventy years of life she had enjoyed the best of health. However, after the loss of her beloved husband several years ago she had not enjoyed her previous good health and when she fell a victim to that dread disease of pneumonia she was unable to fight a winning battle. She was given the best of care at the hospital but of no avail. She had been a resident of this county 42 years. Her husband was a contractor for the C. & N. W. when that road was built here and she had seen this place when there was not a building in sight. In the many years that she resided here she won for herself and excellent family a host of good friends who sincerely mourn her death.

Johanna Rohan was born in County Kerry, Ireland, in 1831. In 1852 she came to the United States, locating in Buffalo, New York. Here she was married four years later to Daniel Rohan. Five years later they came to Carroll county and had resided here since. This union was blessed with six children as follows: Michael, of Carroll, T. B. of Clarion, John M., presence just now not known and David of Carroll. Joseph and Daniel preceded her to the great beyond some years ago. She was a devout and earnest member of the Catholic church and died well fortified in that church.

The funeral services were held from St. Joseph's church Monday forenoon at 10 o'clock, requiem high mass being read by Very Rev. Father Farrelly, after which a host of mourning relatives and friends attended the remains to the last final sleeping place of this excellent pioneer woman in the Catholic cemetery.
