Daniel Rohan Dies at His Home after Brief Illness

Daniel Rohan died at his home in Sheridan township last Thursday morning after a brief illness from pneumonia. He had been in poor health for some time past and on last Monday morning fell and sprained one of his hips. So painful was the injury that a doctor was summoned and it was thought he was doing nicely. On Wednesday symptoms of pneumonia were discovered. From that time on the patient rapidly failed and medical skill was unable to arrest the progress of the disease. On the following morning at 2:30 he passed into that sleep from which there is no waking.

Twenty-one years ago the deceased located on the farm in Sheridan township where he resided the remainder of his days. He was well known to the citizens of that part of the county and in his younger days was among the progressive and industrious men of the township. He loved his home and did all in his power to make it pleasant for his wife and family. He enjoyed the fullest confidence of his neighbors and friends and now that he has gone they mourn over his grave.

The funeral was held at St. Joseph's church Saturday morning and was attended by many of the friends of the departed who had come to pay their last respect to one they loved and respected.

Daniel Rohan was born in County Kerry, Ireland in 1826 and moved to America in 1846. He located at Buffalo, N. Y. and ten years later was united in marriage to Miss Johanna Murphy of that city. In 1863 they moved to Iowa and located in Dubuque. There Mr. Rohan entered the employment of the Northwestern railroad company and worked under Mr. Douglas, one of the contractors, until the road was completed to Council Bluffs. He was then assigned as foreman of a section at Crescent where he resided until 1870 when he was placed in charge of a crew at Glidden and remained there until the spring of 1877 when he moved on his farm in Sheridan.

There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rohan six boys and one girl, the latter dying in infancy. Four of the boys are still living and are: Michael, T. B., John and David. The aged mother still survives but is in poor health and it is the earnest prayer of her many friends that she will bear up under her deep affliction caused by the death of him to whom she plighted her love fifty-two years ago. She is now living with her son David, the only one of the family now at the old homestead. In their affliction the relatives have the sincere sympathy of their many friends.
