Richard Ricke of Breda Died March 21, After Lingering Illness

Richard Ricke, a pioneer resident of Breda, passed away at his home here March 21, 1928, after several months' illness of angina pectoris, with which he had been ailing for several years. He suffered his first severe attack December 23, but was able to be up and around again and his many friends had hopes for his recovery, but he gradually grew weaker until death ended his suffering.

Richard Ricke was born at Hanover, Germany, May 12, 1843, and reached the age of 84 years. He was a son of Bernard and Adeline Ricke. He came to America with his parents in 1861 and they first located in Kentucky, then to Joe Davies county, Illinois, and worked on a farm for $77 the first year, second year $90, and the third $160. In 1865 he bought land for $9.50 per acre, and sold it three years later for $31.50 per acre. He later came to Carroll county, locating in Kniest township, where he purchased 220 acres in Section 4. In 1878 he moved to Breda and engaged in the hardware business with H. Olerich, Sr. In 1883 he engaged in the general merchandising business, disposing of this in 1911 to Bohnenkamp & Determan, after which he retired.

In January, 1865, in Joe Davies county, Illinois, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Fleege. Ten children were born to this union, of whom four died in infancy. Ben died in 1905; (Christine) Mrs. C. A. Bohnenkamp, on February 9, 1909; Joe, September 15, 1909, and Theresa, Mrs. John Vanderheiden in 1923. One son and daughter survive: Henry of Lucile, Idaho and Julia, Mrs. F. J. Bohnenkamp of Breda. His wife passed away November 9, 1902. In June, 1905, he was married to Mrs. Kate Determan, who survives him.

The funeral was held at St. Bernard's Catholic church at Breda Saturday morning at 9:30, and the remains were laid to rest in St. Bernard's cemetery.

Mr. Ricke was of a jolly disposition and always had a kind word and smile for everyone. He will be greatly missed by his family and large circle of friends. All the business places in Breda were closed during the funeral services. The funeral was one of the largest held in Breda for some time.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Frank Ricke and son of Morgan, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ricke and son of Wesley, Ia.; Mrs. Mary Hendricks, Mrs. Clem Wuebben, Mr. and Mrs. Will Schurman and Henry Bonnet of East Dubuque, Ill.; Clem Ricke of Williams; Frank Ricke of Elgin, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Williams and son, Mrs. John Waldorf of Lyons, Ia.; Will Determan of Breckenridge, Tex.; Miss Drusilla Bohnenkamp, Tulsa, Okla.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Steele, Carroll, and Mr. and Mrs. John Danner of near Maple River.
