Edward O. Rehker, Arcadia Resident, Died Last Thursday

Early County Settler Passed Away at the Home of His Daughter.

Another of the early settlers of Carroll county has been called to his eternal reward. The Times is grieved to chronicle the death of Edward O. Rehker, old and respected resident of Arcadia, who passed away last Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sier, at Elgin, Neb.

Edward O. Rehker was born in Neuen Kirchen, Westfalen, Germany in the year 1847. At the age of 19, he left his home and sailed to America, landing at St. Louis. After a few months, climate not agreeing with him in that locality, he journeyed farther north, arriving in the vicinity of Holy Cross, Dubuque county. Later, at New Vienna, he met and married Mrs. Philomena Hinners Schroeder, a widow with four children, who are now Mrs. Elizabeth Schrad, Randolph, Neb.; J. H. Schroeder, Arcadia, Ia.; Mrs. Clem Olberding, Vail, Ia.; Mrs. Joseph Pilmaier of Dubuque, Ia. To their union were born five children who are as follows: Mrs. Frank Vorwald, Canyon, Tex.; Mrs. Bernadine Happe, Danbury, Ia.; Mr. Joseph R. Rehker, Arcadia, Ia.; Mrs. William Sier, Elgin, Neb. One daughter, Frances, died in infancy. They lived in Dubuque county until 1882, when the family moved to Arcadia, Ia., settling on a farm near Arcadia, where they resided until 1893, when they moved to town. In 1922, Mr. and Mrs. Rehker celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in town, at which all the family was present.

Last February they went to live with their daughter, Mrs. Sier, at Elgin, Neb., where the deceased passed away, November 8, 1928, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 16 days.

The remains were brought to Arcadia last Saturday evening and the funeral services were held at the St. John's church Monday morning at 9 o'clock with Rev. Father Berger officiating, and the body tenderly laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.

In the death of Mr. Rehker, Arcadia loses another of its oldest and most highly respected citizens. He was a kind and loving father and a faithful husband, a man who was willing to help those who needed help. His death has left a vacancy which will not easily be filled.

He leaves to mourn his death, his aged widow, one brother, Mr. John Rehker, of Carroll, his children, besides a number of grandchildren.

The pall bearers were: Henry Sieve, John Schaubele, B. H. Haverkamp, Henry Kohorst, Frank Noe(?)e, Henry Eike.

The out of town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Will Sier, Elgin, Neb.; Mrs. Bernadine Happe, Danbury, Ia.; Mrs. Frank Vorwald, Miss Marie and John Vorwald of Canyon, Tex.; Mrs. Elizabeth Schrad and daughter, Hilda of Randolph, Neb.; Mrs. Joe Pilmaier, Dubuque, Ia.; Mrs. C. A. Olberding, Vail, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Reis, Roselle, Ia.; Rev. Huelhorst, Dedham, Ia.; Joe Schroeder, Dedham, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. William Hinners, Halbur; Mr. and Mrs. Titus Hinners, Breda, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mollenacker, Carroll, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Naber of Carroll; Mrs. Clem Olberding, Stuart, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. John Olberding, Storm Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Sievers, Glidden, Mrs. Jack Gibson, Ida Grove.
