John Ocken, Sr., was born in Hagendorf, Westphalen, Germany, on August 28, 1846. He left his native land at the age of 25 years and settled in the vicinity of Dyersville, Iowa. Here he married Catherine Schmieding. To this union eight children were born. After his marriage he moved to a farm four miles north of Arcadia in Wheatland township where he resided forty-one years. His health failing he moved to the town of Arcadia. Though able to be about he was in the last five years gradually failing, and after an illness of but three days he died at the home of his son, Frank, north of town on the third of February. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Mrs. Catherine Ocken, three sons, John, Frank and Anton, and five daughters, Mrs. M. J. Daeges, Mrs. Theodore Terlisner, Mrs. M. Stevens, Mrs. Joseph Bruening, and Sr. M. Dorothy. Of the children, Mrs. Stevens and Frank Ocken were unable to attend the funeral on account of sickness. Present from abroad were Joseph Schneiding and wife, of Madison, Minnesota; and John Schneiding, of Westphalia, Iowa.
