Mother of Former Carroll Priest Is Dead at Arcadia

Mrs. Katherine Ocken Taken This Morning at 5:30 O'Clock

Mrs. Katherine Ocken of Arcadia, died this morning at 5:30 o'clock at her home, where she had been ill for the last three months. She had been in frail health for the last year. Mrs. Ocken is the mother of Mrs. Mary Stevens of Carroll and of the Rev. Father A. H. Ocken of Royal, formerly assistant at Ss. Peter and Paul's church.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning in St. John's Catholic church with a solemn requiem mass, which will be read by her son, the Rev. Father Ocken. Burial will be in the cemetery at Arcadia.

Katherine Schmeiding was born at Petersburg, Ia., April 8, 1860, and grew to womanhood there. She was married at that place Jan. 23, 1877, to John Ocken and they immediately came to Carroll county and located on a farm four miles north of Arcadia where they lived until 1917. Mr. Ocken then retired and they moved to Arcadia. Mr. Ocken died in February, 1920.

Mrs. Ocken is survived by the following children: John Ocken of Maple River; Mrs. Elizabeth Daeges of Templeton; Mrs. Theresa Terlisner of Arcadia; Mrs. Mary Stevens of Carroll; Sister M. Dorothy of Dubuque; Mrs. Joseph Bruening of Maple River; the Rev. A. H. Ocken of Royal; Frank Ocken of Arcadia. She also leaves 41 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Niehaus of Geddes, S. D., and Mrs. Anna Schafer of Orient, S. D.

Mrs. Ocken was a devout member of the Catholic church and died well fortified with the last sacraments. She was a member of the Christian Mothers sodality.
