Mother of Twelve Children Dies In Carroll County

Aged and Respected Carroll Woman Dies in Her Home in This City.

Mrs. Caspar Schaben died at her home in this city at 10:15 o'clock Sunday morning, February 5, after an illness of five weeks. She had been in poor health for the last four years, but was still able to mingle with the members of her family most of the time. Mrs. Schaben suffered a severe attack of pleurisy five weeks ago, and this together with chronic bronchial trouble, from which she had been a sufferer for several years, proved too much for her weakened condition. The death of her remaining sister, Mrs. Clara Sheffield of Oakland, Calif., was also a great shock to her and she failed rapidly after her sister's death. She slept away peacefully Sunday, surrounded by her loved ones, and well fortified with the last rites of the Catholic church of which she was a devout member. She was also a member of the Rosary sodality of the SS. Peter and Paul's church.

Mrs. Schaben was one of the good mothers of the city. Her outstanding quality was her unselfish devotion to her family, and her happiest moments were those when she was surrounded by the members of her family. To know her kindly ways and gentle manner was to love her. Ever thoughtful of others, she lived for her family and will be greatly missed by the husband and the family of excellent children, whom she raised to be an asset to any community.

Mrs. Schaben was the daughter of Lambert and Sophia Wahl and was born as Catherine Wahl in Genesee county, N. Y., December 17, 1854. When very young her parents moved to Cassville, Wis., where she grew to young womanhood and was married November 17, 1874, to Caspar Schaben. The home was established on a farm near Cassville and they resided there four years, coming to Carroll 50 years ago, where they have since lived with the exception of eight years spent at Breda, Ia. Three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Schaben had the pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in this city, with a homecoming of their children.

Surviving Mrs. Schaben are her husband and the following children: Mrs. Sophia Collins of Fort Dodge; Miss Alina Schaben of Omaha; Christ H. Schaben, Omaha; Mrs. Clara Gennert, Omaha; Mrs. Ida Meyer, Sioux City; Mrs. Carrie Balley, Des Moines; Henry Schaben, Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Gertrude Parr, Carroll; Mrs. May Riley, Omaha, and Lambert and Ann, at home. One daughter, Bessie, died in infancy. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her children were all at her bedside before her death, with the exception of Alina, who has been ill in St. Catherine's hospital, Omaha, for the last two months, and Henry, of Oakland, Calif., who was unable to be present. She is also survived by two brothers, James Wahl of Clarinda and Joe Wahl of Berkley, Calif., and also by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Chris. Schaben, Sr., of this city, who was a great comfort to her during the years of her failing health.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fr. Schenkelberg this morning at 9 o'clock and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.
