Death of Mrs. A. L. Gnam Saturday Night

Passes Away at Home on Adams St.

Had Been Resident of County for More Than Forty Years and of Carroll for Nearly Thirty. -- Funeral on Monday at SS. Peter and Paul's

Mrs. A. L. Gnam, one of the pioneer mothers of Carroll county and a resident of Carroll since 1885, died on Friday morning at her home in this city. The cause of death was pleuro-pneumonia, the first attack of which was about a month before her death. The funeral was held on Monday, the 25th, at SS. Peter and Paul's church of which she was a member, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Father Kuemper.

The deceased, whose maiden name was Theresia Meiers, was born near Stuttgart, Wurtenberg, Germany, on the fifth day of April, 1840, and came to America with her parents while yet a child. In the year 1859 at Ottawa, Ill., she was married to A. L. Gnam, who survives her. They continued to live in Illinois until 1873, when they came to Carroll county and located at Mount Carmel, where they resided for nine years. In 1882 they moved to Breda, where they lived for three years and then came to Carroll where they have since made their home. Four sons and four daughters survive to mourn the loss of their mother. The sons, who are well known business men of our city are Charles, L. Albert, John J. and Henry W. Another son, Herman, who was a prominent business man of Breda, died about 14 years ago. The daughters are Amelia, widow of Herman Bruning, who was at one time county recorder of this county; Lena, Mrs. John H. Powers, of Chicago; Clara, Mrs. Dr. Shirley of Carroll and Mary, Mrs. Dr. E. B. Rogers, of El Paso, Texas. All the living children were present at the funeral.

Mrs. Gnam was an ideal Christian mother, faithful and devoted to the church of which she was a member, and especially noteworthy for her devotion to the interests and well being of the large family of children whom she reared to maturity and all of whom she saw established in homes of their own before her summons came to depart. Sorrowing as they must over the death of their closest and most unselfish friend, they may still find their greatest comfort in the precious memories of her untiring solicitude and care for them as her children. Her best monument will be the love and affection of the sons and daughters whom she reared to lives of usefulness and who command the esteem of the community in which they live.

The following from out of town were in attendance on the funeral; Messrs. Fran and Mat Meyers, of Seneca, Ill., Mr. Henry Rapp, Mrs. Nott, and (?) Young, of Minden, Iowa; all of these being cousins of the deceased. Mr. J.H. McConlough and daughter, Irene, of Des Moines; Mr. Patrick Behan and his son, John, and daughter, Ann, of Clinton, Iowa. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful.
