Death Takes Meinhardt, Bank Official

Joseph P. Meinhardt, 62, Carroll banker, was stricken with a heart attack early Saturday and died at 2:50 a.m. at St. Anthony Hospital. He was vice president, trust officer and a direct of the Carroll County State Bank. He had been with the bank since Jan. 2, 1929.

Solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in SS Peter and Paul Church, with interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call at the Twit Funeral Home in Carroll starting at 7 p.m. Sunday. Carroll Elks Lodge No. 1637 will hold memorial services at the funeral home Sunday at 7:30, after which there will be rosaries at 8 and 8:45. Four rosaries are scheduled for Monday, the first at 3 p.m.; another at 7:30 p.m. by Charles Carroll Council, Knights of Columbus, with a Fourth Degree honor guard; the third at 8 p.m. by the Holy Name Society of Holy Spirit parish; and the last, at 8:45 p.m.

Mr. Meinhardt, son of Lawrence and Elizabeth Hoffman Meinhardt, was born Oct. 15, 1905, at Carroll and was a lifelong resident of the community. He received his early education in SS. Peter and Paul School, Carroll; attended high school at Conception, Mo., and for two years was a student at St. John's University, Collegeville, Minn. His marriage to A. Gertrude Pierick took place Sept. 14, 1937, in St. Joseph's Church at Palmer and they made their home in Carroll. For the last year and one-half they have lived at 613 East First Street.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Art (Lucy) Kirsch of Coon Rapids; a son Nick, an Oblate Novitiate at Godfrey, Ill.; three grandchildren, Ramona, Daryl and Annette Kirsch; and a sister, Marie Meinhardt of St. Louis, Mo. Five children, Lawrence, Marie, Agnes, Joe and John, and a brother, Frank, preceded him in death.

Mr. Meinhardt was active in civic, fraternal and religious affairs. He was a member of Holy Spirit parish, and for 21 years served as a trustee of SS. Peter and Paul Church. He had been active in fund drives for the parish, Kuemper High School, St. Anthony Nursing Home and the Red Cross.

In 1962 he was named to the post of Fourth Ward councilman at a special meeting of the Carroll City Council.

He was a member of the Third and Fourth Degrees of the Knights of Columbus, was a past gran knight and past district deputy in the K. of C. organization, and was treasurer of the Columbus Building Association at the time of his death. On Oct. 20, 1962 he was knighted as a Knight of St. Gregory. He also held membership in the Elk's Lodge, and was chaplain of Carroll Council No. 543, United Commercial Travelers.
