Joseph Schmitt, 60 Year resident Here, Dies Friday

Had Lived On Farm In Roselle Township Until Fifteen Years Ago

Joseph E. Schmitt, resident of Carroll county for 60 years, died at this home at 116 South Adams street last evening at 9 o’clock, after an illness of about a week. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9 o’clock at Ss. Peter and Paul’s church and burial will be in the Ss. Peter and Paul’s cemetery.

Joseph E. Schmitt was born Oct. 12, 1865 at Karbach, Bavaria, Germany, and came with his parents to the United States at the age of six. They settled in New York city until May, 1873, when they came to Carroll county and located on a farm in Roselle township.

He was married to Elizabeth Reineke, May 21, 1895, and they made their home on a farm three miles south of Carroll. Fifteen years ago Mr. Schmitt retired and came to Carroll where he lived until the time of his death.

He was for many years a member of the school board in Roselle township. He was a member of the Holy Name society and of Ss. Peter and Paul’s church, of which he was a devout member. He belonged to the hard working band of pioneers of Carroll county, and was a loyal friend and neighbor.

Surviving with his widow are two children, George Schmitt, at home, and a daughter, Mrs. John Goffinet (Barbara), also of Carroll. He leaves in addition a grandson, Joseph Goffinet, a brother, George Schmitt, and a sister, Mrs. John Zurn, all of Carroll.
