Rita D. Meyer
CarrollRita Meyer, 85, of Carroll, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at her residence in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Father Timothy Schott will officiate.
Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, where a rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. and there will be a Christian wake service by St. Lawrence Parish at 7 p.m.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Carroll.
Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for St. Anthony Hospice or the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation.
Lectors for the Mass will be grandchildren: Chelle O'Connell, Kelly Loew and Chris Fisher. Gift bearers will be granddaughters: Tracy Lambert, Kelsey Soukup, Karisa Meyer and Lindsey Meyer and great-granddaughter, HaleyBoell-Fielder. Mass servers will be a grandson, Cass Weitl and Kolby Vetter and Taylor Pudenz. Soloist will be a granddaughter, McKenzie Weitl. Eucharistic ministers will be granddaughters, Natasha Havercamp, Trisha Tigges and Danielle Goetzinger.
casket bearers will be grandsons: Dean Boell, Troy Kean, Chad Fisher, Nick Quandt, Dillon Weitl, Josh Meyer, Sam Goetzinger and Teylor Soukup.
St. Anthony Hospital Auxilliary will form an honor guard at the church for the Mass.
A daughter of William and Mary (Pietig) Gross, she was born May 4, 1924 at Mount Carmel. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and graduated from St. Angela Academy in 1941. Following high school, she worked as a bookkeeper until 1943, when she returned to the farm to help her parents.
On Aug. 27, 1946, she married Arnold "Pidge" Meyer at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with Father Peter M. Sturm officiating. The couple lived in Breda until 1955, when they moved to Carroll. She did sewing and alterations for Kasperbauer Cleaners and from 1975 until1983, managed the Gold Bond Redemption Center in Carroll. In later years, she worked part time for Carroll County State Bank.
She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, the Parish Ladies Guild, RSVP, the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, the Carroll American Legion Auxiliary and she was a New Hope Village Store volunteer. She enjoyed her family, traveling, playing cards, Chicago Cubs baseball and Iowa State University athletics.
Survivors include her children: Linda Boell and husband Myron of Panora, Jane Victor and husband Bob of St. Louis, Mo., Karin King of Union, Mo., Barb Johnston of Waukee, Kris Quandt and husband of Willey, Peggy Weitl and husband Dan of Templeton, Doug Meyer and wife Kelly of Dubuque, Lori Goetzinger and husband Neil of Carroll, Beth Soukup and husband Mark of Overland Park, Kan., Dave Meyer andwife Kristi of Panora and Jim Meyer and wife Becky of Columbus, Ohio; 31 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law: Zelda Gross of Carroll and Lillian Raine of Carroll.
Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold "Pidge" Meyer, in June 1988; Her parents; two granddaughters: Kimberly Boell and Brenda Lee Boell; a son-in-law, Dennis Johnston; brothers: Ray, Norbert and Paul Gross; and sisters: Louise Kanne, Sister Mynette Gross F.P.S.A., Florence Schapman and mae Pudenz.
