I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between 1874 and 1923. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. The article was originally published on Friday, 17 July 1908. It reads as follows:
Elisabeth Dunkel
On Wednesday last week Elisabeth Dunkel departed this life at the home of her niece, Mrs. W. A. Arts, in the Third Ward here. The deceased was born on 16 February 1835 at Schoeppingen, Westphalia. In 1888 she came to America and lived with her sister, Mrs. L. Keckevoet. After her [sister’s] death two years ago, she stayed with the family of W. A. Arts.
The deceased is survived by her nephew, H. D. Bruening of Breda and her nieces, Mrs. W. A. Arts, Mrs. August Mannemann, and Miss Franziska Keckevoet. The funeral took place Friday morning from the local Saints Peter and Paul Church. May she rest in peace.
