I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between 1874 and 1923. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. The article was originally published on Friday, 24 July 1908. It reads as follows:
John Fleskes
On Thursday evening last week John Fleskes died at his home in the Third Ward. The deceased had long been suffering from dropsy.
He was born on 15 April 1830 in Keppln, Rhenish Prussia. In 1857 he married Miss Wilhelmina Glaser in Duesseldorf. In 1879 Mr. and Mrs. Fleskes immigrated to America and settled in Carroll, where the deceased worked at the trade of cabinetmaker.
His wife died on 8 March 1894 and she was survived by her spouse and one son. On 12 October 1895 John Fleskes married Miss Veronica Vicarius, and the latter died in February 1899. The deceased is survived by a son, two step-sons, and a step-daughter.
The funeral took place Saturday morning from the local Saints Peter and Paul Church.
May he rest in peace.
