John Richey Ramsey, second son of J. H. and Nancy (Richey) Ramsey was born near Tipton, Iowa, on June 4th, 1858.

While still very young his parents returned to their old home near Bucyrus, Ohio, and then moved to Terra Haute, Indiana. Later on they returned to Iowa where they purchased a farm near Lisbon in Linn County.

In the spring of 1869 they moved to Carroll County where they lived for many years on the old James Richey farm just east of where Dedham now is. The country was new and unsettled, there being only one house between their home and Carroll. In this new country John grew to manhood and the most of the years were spent in the vicinity of Dedham, with the exception of about three years which he spent in Seattle, Washington, during his early twenties.

In January, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Wilson of Dedham.

About ten years ago he and his family moved to a farm near Estherville, and it was near here that Mrs. Ramsey passed away on March 7, 1926.

His family of nine sons and daughters all survive him, they are:

Mrs. Alta Andre of Jackson, Minnesota; Paul Ramsey and Mrs. Ruth Thompson, both of Rock Falls, Illinois; Mrs. Vivian Denney of Alpha, Minnesota; Miss Vera Ramsey and Mrs. Edith Lamack, both of Estherville; Eleven grandchildren and numerous Nephews and nieces; one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Wilson of Manning, and two brothers Harry Ramsey and Charles Ramsey of Botna. Four sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

John was liked and respected by all who knew him and will be missed by a large circle of friends. Although John never identified himself with any church, he always attended the Methodist church whenever possible. He dearly loved sacred music and delighted in singing hymns.

After the death of Mrs. Ramsey he made his home with his children and his two brothers, Harry and Charles.

A number of years ago he was injured by the kick of a horse and poor health resulted from this injury. But his last illness was of only four days and he passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alta Andre, in the early morning of Wednesday, February 8, 1933, at the age of 74 years, 8 months, and four days.

He was returned to Dedham for burial beside his wife.

The funeral was held in the Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 10th, 1933, just sixty-four years from the day he arrived in Carroll County. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Holliday.

Four nephews and two grand-nephews acted as pall-bearers:

Charles Ramsey, Jr., Edward Ramsey, Mayburn Ramsey, Ralph Ramsey, William Ramsey, Ralph Howard Ramsey.
