I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 7 June1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

On Wednesday Joseph Friedmann and his brothers Peter and Wilhelm, as well as Mrs. Matthias Reinhard, received a telegram that their mother, who was living in Luxemburg, Dubuque County, Iowa, had passed away. The deceased had suffered from rheumatism for 10 years, which had caused her to be unable to use her limbs. She had reached the advanced age of 79 years, and seven years ago she and her husband, whom she has now preceded in death, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. At her grave mourn her elderly husband and eight children, including the above four residing in Carroll County, Lena Reinhard in Minnesota, the widow Helis in Worthington, Delaware County, Iowa, as well as John and Mrs. Maria Neiser in Luxemburg, Dubuque County, Iowa. Mrs. Mathias Reinhard and Joseph Friedmann traveled there on Wednesday evening to attend the funeral, which takes place Friday morning. Our deepest sympathies to the bereaved.

Translator’s Note: I believe the deceased’s maiden name was Elisabeth Wenzel, born in 1819.
