I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 7 June1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

Breda
The funeral of N. P. Kortenbach was one of the largest, if not the largest, that was ever held in the Breda community. He was one of the first settlers in Kniest Township. He himself once told us that in 1869 his dear wife was the first person buried in the Mt. Carmel cemetery.
