I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 14 June 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
To our readers we bring the sad report that Mrs. John Meyer of Roselle Township passed away Saturday evening at six o’clock following a very short illness. From Tuesday to Wednesday night, Mrs. Meyer had endured a difficult delivery, which was the cause of her sudden death. Everything that skill and science could provide was employed, the best doctors surrounded the sickbed, but all was for naught, and by Saturday evening she gave up her spirit. The deceased, whose maiden name was Katharina Rossauer, was just 40 years old. It is a terrible blow to her spouse and nine children, of whom the younger ones still so much needed the care of their dear mother. The burial took place Monday morning and was celebrated with a solemn funeral conducted by Rev. Father Frey. Innumerable mourners from Roselle and beyond were present to pay their respects to the deceased, who was highly regarded by her fellow citizens. Our deepest sympathies to the bereaved.
