Elder J.F. Sharp, one of the well-known residents of this locality, passed away last Friday at the home of his son, William, at Yetter, Sac County. The funeral was held in the Carroll Church of God last Sunday and the remains laid away in the cemetery at this place. The sermon was delivered by Re. Newcomer, pastor of the church. The deceased came to Carroll 15 years ago and at various times served as supply preacher in the local churches. He lived with his family in Stringtown till the death of his wife about 2 years aog. Since then he has lived with his sons, most of the time with William at Yeter. He was born in Huntingdon Furnace, Huntingdon co, PA on 7 June 1825. From an account of his life prepared by himself we quote: "He was converted to God and received in the church at the age of 17 years; was sent to preach the gospel and in 1855 came to Iowa, settling at Lynnville, Jasper county. He was received into the East Des Moines conference of the United Brethern Church,ordained into the office of elder and placed in the itinerant ranks. After traveling 15-16 years he entered the work of evangelist, in which work he labored for 6-7 years. After this he retired from regular work and in his last years would preach ocassionally when called upon." He moved with his family from Jasper county to Harlan where he lived for a number of years; then moved to Carroll about 15 years ago. His wife passed away about 2 years ago. He is survived by 5 sons: Robert and Marion who live in Nebraska and Arthur, William and Frank who are well known in this county. Mrs. Lincoln Farrell of Carroll and Mrs. James Callaway of the eastern part of the county are his only surviving daughters.
