I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 18 January 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
[Gottfried Rust]
After a three-month illness, Gottfried Rust passed away last Friday evening at nine o’clock, surrounded by his entire family. The deceased was born on 4 March 1827 in Seulinger, Province of Hanover. After he and his wife had lived six happy years and she had given him three children, she was taken from him by death. A long time later he married again, and this marriage produced four children. The deceased had lived in America since 1880 and was respected and esteemed by all his acquaintances. The funeral took place last Monday, with numerous people in attendance, at Saints Peter and Paul Church. Our deepest sympathy to the survivors.
