I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 18 January 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

[Katharina Löbel]

On Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, in the home of her son John, the widow Katharina Löbel [Loebel] passed away at the age of 81 years and 9 months. The deceased had spent her twilight years with her son John. Her husband preceded her in death 20 years ago. On 26 December she had suffered a stroke that led to her death. She leaves behind three sons: John, our respected fellow-citizen; August in Milwaukee; and Eduard in Markesan, Wisconsin. We do not yet know when the funeral will take place. -–Later: The burial will take place Saturday afternoon from the Lutheran Church.
